George played his early years football in Yorkshire before joining Wolves in November 1935. He made his junior Wolves debut in the Birmingham Combination against Hinckley United on 7 December 1935 and two weeks later against Gloucester City he scored his first goal. George then made his debut for the Reserves against Sheffield United where he scored twice. His senior debut 11 days later against Grimsby Town, saw him score the only goal in a Wolves victory. In the 1937/8 season he helped Wolves become runners up in the Football League. In September 1937 he played for the Football League alongside his Wolves colleagues Stan Cullis and Tom Galley against the Scottish League at Ibrox Park.

He signed for Coventry City but missed out on promotion from the Second Division as they finished one point behind runners up Manchester United. He made a number of appearances during the War (including guesting for Northampton Town) and as football started up again after the war he netted a hat-trick against Millwall in November 1946. George retired in May 1948 after an injury sustained eight months earlier against West Bromwich Albion.
