Carl-Zeiss Jena FC

Formed in 1946 as SG Ernst Abbe and former member of the East German national League, Carl-Ziess Jena won the East German League on three occasions and the Cup on four. They won the European Cup-Winners Cup in 1981, beating Dynamo Tblisi in Dusseldorf. Wolves faced Carl-Zeiss Jena in the 1971/72 UEFA Cup Third Round. The first leg at the snowbound Ernest-Abbe-Stadion was won by Wolves thanks to a 12 minute strike from John Richards. Wolves won the second leg comfortably thanks to a goal from Kenny Hibbitt and a brace from Derek Dougan. In the First two rounds Jena had beaten Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Yugoslav’s OFK Beogtrad respectively. Wolves and Carl-Zeiss Jena have met once since, in a friendly in Germany in July 1998. Wolves won 1-0 thanks to a Steve Bull goal.
