Leicester City FC

Formed in 1884 as Leicester Fosse and renamed Leicester City in 1919 after Fosse went out of business for financial reasons. They moved into Filbert Street in 1891 and on to the Walkers Stadium in 2002. The Foxes were Premier League Championship in 201516 and Football League runners-up in 1929. They have won the Second Division on six occasions (a League record) 1925, 1937, 1954, 1957, 1971 and 1980. City were FA Cup runners-up in 1949 (to Wolves) 1961, 1963 and 1969. They have won the League Cup on three occasions 1964, 1997 and 2000 and been runners-up twice, 1965 and 1999. The first League fixture between the two clubs came on 6 October 1906 at Filbert Street, City won 2-0. The first at Molineux came on 9 February 1907 and Wolves won thanks to a John Roberts fifteenth minute strike. Wolves biggest ever League victory came against Leicester City on 15 April 1938, a 10-1 success came through goals from Dennis Westcott 13, 52, 85, 89, Dickie Dorsett 24, 40, 42, 89, Bryn Jones 48 and Teddy Maguire 61 with Stan Cullis netting an own goal nine minutes from time. Wolves were promoted with Leicester City in 1983 and relegated together from the Premier League in 2004. City’s record transfer paid is £5,500,000 for Adi Akinbiyi from Wolves in July 2000 and Steve Claridge netted winning goals for City in the Play-off final in 1996 and League Cup final in 1997. Arthur Rowley, who started his career with Wolves, netted an amazing 265 goals in just 303 appearances for the Filbert Street, and in doing so netted fourteen hat-tricks. He went on to be the Football League’s all time top scorer.
