Tommy Allen made just the one appearance for the club before transfer to the North-East with Sunderland. But after just one season and 20 appearances, an administrative oversight saw him move to the South Coast with League new-comers Southampton. During his time at The Dell he helped them to runners-up spot in the Third Division in his first season and the Championship of the Third Division (South) 12 months later. During the ‘Saints’ promotion season Allen was ever-present and conceded just 21 goals. In 1927 he helped Southampton get to the Semi-final of the FA Cup, only to lose at Stamford Bridge to Arsenal. After 323 appearances at the Dell, Allen returned to the Midlands with Coventry City in an exchange deal that took Bill Stoddart to the South Coast. A model of consistency, Allen made 164 appearances at Highfield Road, which included a run of over 100 consecutive appearances. In the summer of 1928 Tommy moved to Accrington Stanley where he made a further 37 appearances, including his 500th League appearance at home to Tranmere Rovers on the final day of the 1932/33 season. 15 months later Allen moved to Northampton Town where he played his 591st and final senior match. He then dropped into Non-League circles with Kidderminster Harriers.
