Born in Woolwich on 30 September 1952, an Amateur with Chelsea and had a short spell on trial with Wolves from September to October 1972. After an unsuccessful time at Molineux he moved onto and signed for Gillingham for who he helped gain promotion from the Fourth Division in 1974. Aitken was soon on the move again, this time to Southern League Wimbledon in September of that year. Whilst at Plough Lane he helped the South London club to gain access to the Football League with the championship of the Southern League in 1975, 1976 and 1977. Aitken played in their first League encounter, a 3-3 at home to Halifax Town on 20th August 1977, but was released halfway through their first season of League football. England Youth international and a Full-back, Aitken made a total of 44 first class appearances.
