Mark Atkins started his career with Scunthorpe United and he went on to make 64 appearances at the Old Show Ground before transferring to Blackburn Rovers. At Ewood Park he became a free-scoring full-back and helped them to promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs in 1992. Atkins was a part of the Ewood Park team who were runners-up in the Premier League and a season later the Championship but with Kenny Dalglish building his squad Atkins became surplus to requirements and joined Wolves for £1,000,000.
At Molineux he was a solid and regular member of the squad and helped Wolves into the play-offs in 1997. By the time he moved to York City in 1999 he had 153 appearances to his name as well as 11 goals.
His time at York was only short with further short stints at Doncaster Rovers and Hull City, before he joined Shrewsbury Town. He spent two seasons at Gay Meadow, but it ended on a miserable note as Town were relegated from the Football League in 2003. He has since gone into Non-League football.
