Remembrance: Wolves goalkeeper James Utterson who had made his debut at Stoke just twelve months before, died in a Wolverhampton nursing home on the morning of this match. He died as a result of his injuries sustained in the match at Middlesbrough earlier in the season. Before the game a minute silence was held and the Drums, Pipes and Bugles of the Fifth Battalion North Staffs Regiment beat the retreat.
