Bell, John ‘Jock’

Winger

Career: Dundee Wanderers, Renton FC 1893, Bacup Borough, WOLVES Jly 94, Grimsby Town Jne 95, Chesterfield Town 1899,  Millwall cs 1901, Leicester Fosse.

Centre-forward Jock Bell played for Dundee Wanderers, Renton and Bacup Borough before joining Wolves and scoring on his first start in Wolves colors for the first time 1n the 1894 Pre-season Practice match. He went on to make six appearances for the First team netting two goals, both against Bolton Wanderers. For the Reserves he made 23 appearances and hit 18 goals which included at hat-trick at Smethwick Carriage Works in the Birmingham & District League. He transferred to Grimsby Town and went on to make 88 appearances netting 17 goals. Whilst playing for the ‘Fishermen’ they missed out on promotion to the First Division twice, by four points to Liverpool and Manchester City in 1896 and by a single point to Newton Heath twelve months later. He became a half-back in his time at Grimsby and in 1899 transferred to Chesterfield Town for whom he made 61 appearances netting two goals. His debut at Saltergate was their first ever Football League fixture at The Wednesday. Bell moved Millwall and helped them to there first FA Cup Semi-final in 1903 but just months later he transferred to Leicester Fosse. At Fosse Bell made 22 appearances but by the end of the season they had to seek re-election. Jock was also a part-time reservist with the Kincardine Militia.
