England International Beasant was one of the main stays of the Wimbledon team for nine years and made 349 appearances for the South London club. In fact between August 1981 and May 1988, Beasant made an amazing 304 consecutive appearances for the ‘Crazy Gang’. He helped them to promotion from the Fourth Division in 1981, but suffered Relegation twelve months later. A year later they won promotion against as Champions, and then immediately won promotion from the Third Division. Two years later they won there place in the top division and in May 1988, Dave Beasant became the first goal keeper to save a penalty in a FA Cup final as he captained ‘The Dons’ to FA Cup success with victory over Liverpool.
He then had a short spell with Newcastle United before returning to the capital with Chelsea. He made 157 appearances with the Stamford Bridge club and helped them to promotion from Division Two as champions in 1989 and to success in the Full-Members Cup in 1990. Dave made six appearances on loan with Grimsby Town and five on loan with Wolves before transferring to Southampton. Four years and 105 appearances later he was on the move to Nottingham Forest firstly on loan at the City Ground and made 153 appearances, won the Division One Championship in 1993 and suffered Relegation from the Premier League in 1994. He then went on to play for a number of different clubs taking his total of senior appearances to 898, Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth, Bradford City, Wigan Athletic, Brighton & Hove Albion, Sheffield United on trial February 2003. He became Fulham’s goalkeeping coach and joined his ex-Wimbledon team mate Lawrie Sanchez as the Northern Ireland goalkeeper coach. He then joined Sanchez as assistant manager at Fulham only for the pair to be sacked just months later. Beasant then went on to become senior coach at Glenn Hoddles Football Academy. Nicknamed ‘Lurch’ Dave Beasant started his career with Edgware Town in August 1978 before joining Wimbledon in August 1979. Beasant who won two England caps was a squad member for the 1990 World Cup finals.
