Bird, Kenneth Benjamin

Goalkeeper.

Born in Norwich, 25 September 1918; Died: September 1987.

Career: Willenhall Rovers, WOLVES, Bournemouth & Biscome Oct 38, Dorchester Town (player-manager) Aug 54.

Ken Bird represented the England Schools and joined Wolves from Willenhall Rovers. A regular in the junior side in the Birmingham Combination Ken made his debut at hom  e to Halesowen on 14 April 1936, a match played at Bushbury Gas Works.

He moved to Bournemouth & Biscome and 333 appearances. Whilst at Dean Court and helped them to the Third Division (South) Cup in 1946 before becoming player-manager of Dorchester Town. He helped them to the Western League title in 1955 and then became the landlord of the Royal Oak pub in Dorchester and then a sales rep for a southern tiling firm before emigrating to the United States with his family. Ken returned in the 1970s to Swanage were he became the local pier master for ten years until his retirement in September 1980.
